Context: Development of a simulation-style virtual instructor-led training (VILT) course
Audience: Federal grant monitoring officials
Purpose: Teach learners to conduct virtual "site visits" with grant and award recipients
Tools Used: Powtoon, Vyond, Xyleme CMS, PowerPoint
When I was assigned to this project as the instructional designer, the organization was exploring ways to create more engaging learning experiences while still meeting the federal government audience’s preference for synchronous, instructor-led training. I saw an opportunity to innovate by bringing simulation into a virtual instructor-led (VILT) format. Partnering with the subject-matter expert (SME), I devised realistic scenarios and supporting job aids that provided immediate, practical value for learners.

I developed PowerPoint slides to introduce characters and present key content.
I created Powtoon and Vyond videos to immerse participants in a realistic virtual site visit.
The course became a proof of concept for new approaches to synchronous training, and I was invited to present my development process to the entire department. Even the CEO was briefed on its potential as a model for future creative product approaches. A product stakeholder I collaborated with to develop the product later gave me the following feedback:
"Thank you for all the work you're doing to help make us better! The virtual site visit course you worked on earlier this year has become a really interesting proof of concept for us. As a half day class... it has already outsold expectations for a first-year product. There were 3 onsites and 7 open-enrollment deliveries this year and there are already 2 onsites scheduled for next year.... so your baby is doing work! It certainly has given us some food for thought regarding our strategy for the portfolio going forward. Thank you for bringing to life such a different approach for us..."
